Latest update on my purpose-driven cycling journey around the American perimeter.
27 miles (43 km) – Total so far: 2,208 miles (3,553 km)
The thought of flat riding in Southern California beach country quickly evaporated by mid-morning as we came upon the first of many steep grades in La Jolla. The first was on Torrey Pines Road coming in to the city. The grade was steep, and the climb ended up curling up the side of Soledad Mountain some 1.6 miles before things finally leveled off. But it wasn’t over there. The route we chose took us through the heart of La Jolla, replete with cobblestone roads, terribly cracking roadways, lots of twisting and turning, and a myriad of hills. For such an exclusive and high-priced area, the roads really sucked, but the views approached spectacular.
The remainder of the short ride today meandered through the western side of San Diego. We passed through the towns of Cardiff By the Sea, Solana Beach, Del Mar, La Jolla, and San Diego. Of particular note was Mission Beach CA. Absolutely awesome beach community with row after row of really nice vacation rentals and condos overlooking a pearly white sand beach. I intend to add this spot to my upcoming vacation list.
We finished the day in the heart of San Diego, preparing for tomorrow’s big push to the U.S. / Mexico border via Coronado Island, and the end of this tour. Can’t wait!!!
It’s All Good.
