U.S. 360 Tour IV – Day 50 from Leggett CA to Myers Flat CA (Avenue of the Giants)

Latest update on my purpose-driven cycling journey around the American perimeter.

50 miles – Total so far: 2,555 miles

I want to tell you about lunch today. I had two whole wheat tortillas, a couple of tablespoons of Skippy peanut butter, a bear claw pastry, and a banana. Not a hugely big deal, right?  What was particularly unique about this lunch is that I had it smack dab in the middle of the most epic forest on earth, the California Giant Redwoods on the famous Avenue of the Giants! The redwoods out here grow to 360 feet in height, over 50 feet in diameter, and some have been here in all their elegance since well-before Christ. This is easily the largest forest of Redwoods on earth, somewhere around 53,000 acres if memory serves. I honestly think that JR Tolkien got his idea of the tree people in Lord of the Rings after a stroll through this awesome place.

I was like a kid in a candy store for much of today’s ride.  I couldn’t stop taking pictures of these giants.  The biggest problem I had was figuring out how to capture the magnitude of the moment on a 3-inch iPhone screen.  While I surely didn’t succeed, I did have fun.  The other thing that struck me was how dark it was, given the small amount of light that makes it through, and the lack of noise.  These trees simply buffer the environment to the point it is hard to believe that you’re on Earth.

I passed through the towns of Piercy, Benbow, Garberville, Miranda, and Myers Flat today. All of the riding was inland, and looked more like a scene from Colorado than from California.

Camping tonight about half way down the Avenue of the Giants smack in the middle of the Humboldt Redwoods at the Burlington Campground. I am surrounded by the enormous handiwork of our Lord tonight and will rest easy amongst this magnificence.

It’s All Good.
