U.S. 360 Tour IV – Day 51 from Myers Flat CA to Arcata CA (Tailwinds and Eureka in My Rear View Mirror )

Latest update on my purpose-driven cycling journey around the American perimeter.

61 miles – Total so far: 2,616 miles

First, the good news.  I experienced a rare Southerly tailwind today, and took great advantage of it.  The locals I’ve spoken with will tell you that the wind is typically from the North, unless a storm is moving in.  More on that later.  The day started on the latter half of the Avenue of Giants amongst the Giant Redwoods.  Given the sheer magnitude of the trees, I didn’t sense there was even a wind. In fact, throughout the entire remainder of the Avenue (about 16 miles), not a single car even passed me.  I was in complete silence (and awe) for what will probably be a highlight of this tour.

Now for the so-so news.  Actually, the news is that there was not really any news. I entered U.S. Highway 101 (which will be prevalent for the remainder of the tour), and passed through a few nondescript towns, notably Eureka CA.  I’m not one to bash towns I pass through, and I choose to live optimistically, so I won’t go into a lot of detail other than to say I’m glad that Eureka is in my rear view mirror, metaphorically speaking. Of notable mention were the three wonderful ladies in a National Forest Service vehicle who approached me during lunch to inquire of my journey and offer their warm support. Thank you, ladies!
Tonight I am not camping, due to the lack of camping options in Arcata CA, so I found the little motel that promises to always keep the light on.  I’d prefer to be camping, but this is pretty close.
And speaking of weather generated by the winds coming from the South, heavy rains will be moving in for the next few days, so communications may be sparse.

It’s All Good.
